Fair question, so let's pose it properly: why should you care? Start with the traffic. Adobe Analytics measured traffic to US retail sites from generative-AI sources growing 4,700% year-over-year in July 2025 — and that wasn't one freak month; the same series showed 1,100% growth in January and 3,100% in April on the way up. Plenty of GEO advice is recycled SEO advice with the acronym swapped. So let's be specific. Four levers map directly onto how the engines retrieve, synthesize and cite — these are where the real gains live.
1. Earn citations on the sources AI already trusts
When an engine answers "what's the best X", it leans hard on pages whose whole job is comparing things: "best of" listicles, review platforms, industry publications, community threads on Reddit and niche forums. A useful editing test: could someone quote two sentences from this page and have them stand alone as a complete, accurate answer? If yes, an engine can do the same thing.
3. Get your entity story straight
Engines build an internal picture of your brand as an entity (a "thing" the model knows about — who you are, what category you're in, who you serve). If your site says one thing, your LinkedIn another, and the directories a third, that picture is blurry, and blurry entities get hedged or skipped during synthesis. The fix is unglamorous: one consistent name, one consistent one-line description of what you do, used everywhere; an about page that states plainly what you are, for whom, since when; organization schema tying it together.
